A Guide to Post Graduate Year - New Route to MRSS
What is the PGY?
PGY is the Post Graduate Year. The ‘PGY’, or ‘New Route to MRSS’, is a new way that you can become registered as a professional Shiatsu practitioner with the Shiatsu Society UK. Once registered you may use the letters MRSS after your name (Member of the Register of the Shiatsu Society).
Why would I want to become an MRSS?
The Shiatsu Society UK was the first professional organisation supporting Shiatsu practitioners in the UK and is by far the largest. The Shiatsu Society will represent you in national regulation, it provides access to block insurance, provides you with a Code of Conduct and Ethics and a Complaints Procedure. It produces a quarterly magazinewith articles, news and information about courses and workshops round the country, as well as offering a forum for discussion about all aspects of the profession and training. In addition the Shiatsu Society is active in promoting Shiatsu nationally – for more details please visit www.shiatsusociety.orgWhat was the ‘Old Route to MRSS’?
Before the PGY the only way to gain MRSS was to attend an Assessment day led by a panel of Assessors from the Shiatsu Society. This is now called the Old Route to MRSS.
Is the PGY a better route to MRSS than the Old Route?
Yes it is. The Old Route Assessment had many structural problems and was not a very fair or consistent way of assessing professional competence.
What is the PGY exactly?
The PGY is essentially a year of structured Continuing Professional Development – CPD. You will choose a supervisor who will guide you through the various activities and requirements of the year.
Can I join the Shiatsu College PGY?
Yes you can – provided that you are a graduate of a Shiatsu School.
To be eligible for the Shiatsu College PGY you must either:
· have graduated from a fully ratified school like the Shiatsu College or
· be a graduate from a non-ratified school and be granted Accredited Prior Learning (APL) by us - the Shiatsu College .
If you graduated from a school which is not fully ratified you will have to gain APL from us before you can start the PGY. To do this you have to be able to show us that you have reached an equivalent standard to our own graduates. This is usually achieved by taking a series of tutorials with one of our senior teachers.
How can I join the Shiatsu College PGY?
We have two ways you can join the PGY programme at the Shiatsu College, a residential option and a non-residential option.
The Non-Residential Option
This option is open to graduates from any Shiatsu School and is organised by the individual branches. Click on the appropriate button below to contact your nearest branch.
The Residential Option
The residential option is only available to Shiatsu College graduates. It takes place alongside the 3rd Year Residential at Gaunts House in Dorset. For full details please contact Annie Cryer at annie-cryer@supranet.com
